Mumbai Saga is a film that tells the story of Amartya Rao (John Abraham), a common man who becomes a powerful gangster after he avenges his brother's attack by a rival goon. He is supported by Bhau (Mahesh Manjrekar), a political leader who uses Amartya's muscle power to gain control over the city. Amartya's rise is challenged by Vijay Savarkar (Emraan Hashmi), an encounter cop who is determined to kill him. The film also shows how Mumbai changed from Bombay to a modern metropolis, with the closure of mills, the emergence of real estate, and the impact of liberalization.
The plot of Mumbai Saga
The film begins with Amartya Rao killing Sunil Khaitan (Samir Soni), a mill owner who wants to evict the workers and sell the land for a huge profit. He is then arrested by Vijay Savarkar, who has been offered a reward of 10 crore rupees by Khaitan's wife Sonali (Anjana Sukhani) for killing Amartya. The film then goes back to eight years ago, when Amartya was a vegetable vendor who got into trouble with Gaitonde (Amole Gupte), a local gangster who extorted money from the vendors. Amartya beats up Gaitonde's men and lands up in jail, where he meets Nari Khan (Gulshan Grover), a smuggler who helps him escape. He also gets bailed out by Bhau, who asks him to work for him. Amartya soon forms his own gang and becomes a feared name in the underworld. He also marries his childhood sweetheart Seema (Kajal Aggarwal) and sends his brother Arjun (Prateik Babbar) to London to keep him away from his violent life.
Meanwhile, Gaitonde joins hands with Khaitan and plans to get rid of Amartya. He also hires Vijay Savarkar, a cop who has a reputation for killing criminals in encounters. Vijay is motivated by money as well as his personal grudge against Amartya, who had killed his friend Jagannath (Shaad Randhawa) in a shootout. Vijay starts hunting down Amartya's men and tries to trap him in various ways. However, Amartya manages to survive and fight back with the help of Bhau, Nari Khan, and his loyal henchman Baba (Rohit Roy). The film reaches its climax when Vijay finally confronts Amartya in a face-off that decides their fate.
